Biography

Cecilia left Sweden after the deposition of her father in 1809, and was raised in her mother's home country, Baden. After her parent's divorce in 1812, she was raised mainly by her grandmother. She met Augustus, Grand Duke of Oldenburg in 1830, and after an hour's conversation, the marriage was decided. She went to her brother in Vienna, where her wedding took place in the presence of the Austrian Emperor Francis I.

Cecilia had an interest in culture. She was the composer of the hymn Heil dir, o Oldenburg!, and she financed the first theatre in the city in 1833. She was, however, never very popular in Oldenburg, where she lived a life confined to the circles of the court. A bridge, a square and a road are named after her, as well as a school.

Marriage

In Vienna on 5 May 1831, she married Augustus, Grand Duke of Oldenburg (Rastede, 13 July 1783 - Oldenburg, 27 February 1853). They were distant cousins, as both were members of the House of Holstein-Gottorp and were descendants of Christian August of Holstein-Gottorp, Prince of Eutin.

They had three sons:

Cecilia died of the fever after the birth of her last child. Cecilia was buried in The Ducal (Herzogliches) Mausoleum in the Churchyard of Saint Gertrude  in Oldenburg. Her sister, Amalia Maria Charlotta, was buried there, too.

In honour of the late Cecilia the locality Cäciliengroden (later incorporated into Sande in Frisia) was named after her.
